AC-3 (backronyms: Audio Codec 3, Advanced Codec 3, Acoustic Coder 3), or Dolby Digital, contains up to 6 discrete sound channels, with 5 channels for normal-range speakers (20 Hz – 20,000 Hz) and 1 channel (20 Hz – 120 Hz) for the subwoofer. The AC3 format supports also variants with the number of channels from 1 to 5.Many Dolby Digital decoders possess downmixing functionality to distribute encoded channels to available speakers. They can play surround information through the front speakers if surround speakers are not available, and distribute the center channel to left and right if no center speaker is available.The AC3 data layout is described in official specifications by a simplified C-like language.
