The a-law algorithm is a standard companding algorithm, used in European digital communications systems to modify the dynamic range of an analog signal for digitizing.
A-LAW encoding effectively reduces the dynamic range of the signal, thereby increasing the coding efficiency and resulting in a better signal-to-distortion ratio.
A-LAW is similar to the mu-law algorithm (U-LAW) used in North America and Japan, but provides a larger dynamic range at the cost of worse proportional distortion for small signals. A-LAW works for international connections if any of the countries uses it.
