Graphics Interchange Format (Gif)
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is an 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format. GIF uses a palette of up to 256 distinct colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. The GIF format also supports animations and allows a separate palette of 256 colors for each frame.
GIFs are suitable used for sharp-edged line art (logos etc.) with a limited number of colors. In contrast to JPEG this takes advantage of the format's lossless compression which preserves very sharp edges.
The PNG format is becoming more popular than GIF as it uses better compression techniques and doesn't have the 256 colors limit. However PNGs don't support animations.
