Mu-law algorithm (Ulaw)
The mu-law algorithm (U-LAW) is a companding algorithm, firstly used in the digital telecommunication systems of North America and Japan. U-LAW reduces the dynamic range of the audio signal. In the analog domain, this increases the signal-to-noise ratio achieved during transmission. In the digital domain, it reduces the quantization error.
U-LAW is similar to the A-LAW algorithm used in Europe.
U-LAW encoding can effectively reduce the dynamic range of the signal increasing the coding efficiency due to biasing the signal. The signal-to-distortion ratio becomes greater than that obtained by linear encoding for a given number of bits. This is an early form of perceptual audio encoding.
The U-LAW algorithm is also used in the .au format.
