MP2, or MPEG-1 Audio Layer II is an audio codec which remains a dominant standard for audio broadcasting as part of the DAB digital radio and DVB digital television standards. It is also used internally in the radio industry.
MP2 has considerably been superseded by MP3 for PC and Internet applications. MP2 is a sub-band audio encoder where compression takes place in the time domain. The MP2 encoder doesn't use interchannel redundancies what makes MP2 less efficient than MP3 on low bitrates. However on high bitrates (256 - 384 kb/s) MP2 works better than MP3 and is generally more error resilient. |
