MP3, or MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 is a digital audio encoding, lossy compression format, and algorithm, designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent audio, but to most listeners sound like original uncompressed audio.
MP3 is an audio-specific compression format which provides representation of pulse-code modulation-encoded audio in less space than straightforward methods. It uses psychoacoustic models to discard components less audible to human hearing, and records the remaining information in an efficient manner. Similar principles are used by JPEG, a lossy image compression format. MP3 has considerably superseded MP2 for PC and Internet applications. Each MP3 file is made up of multiple MP3 frames which consist of the MP3 header and the MP3 data. These frames are independent items: it is possible to cut them from a file and an MP3 player would be able to play it. |
