About Pulse-Code Modulation file
PCM (Pulse-Code Modulation) is a digital representation of an analog signal where the magnitude of the signal is sampled regularly at uniform intervals, then quantized to a series of symbols in a digital code. PCM is used in digital telephone systems. It also is the standard form for digital audio in computers and the compact disc red book format.
Some PCM forms combine signal processing and coding. Differential PCM (DPCM) encodes the PCM values as differences between the current and the previous value. Adaptive Differential PCM (ADPCM) is a variant of DPCM which varies the size of the quantization step to allow further reduction of the required bandwidth for a given signal-to-noise ratio. |
