About Bitmapped graphics
BMP (or .DIB) is a bitmapped graphics format used commonly as a simple graphics file format on the Microsoft Windows and OS/2 platforms.
In BMP files images are generally stored with a color depth from 2 (1-bit) to 16.7 million (24-bit) colors. 8-bit images instead of indexed color can be greyscale. Alpha channels may be stored in a separate files, similar to a greyscale image.
As BMP files are usually not compressed they are much larger than compressed image file formats for the same image. Most BMP files compress very well with lossless data compression algorithms such as ZIP because they contain redundant data.
